Steven Hodgson...

Steven HodgsonSteven completed his Bachelor degree at Melbourne University's Faculty of Music in June 2004, where he undertook studies in Composition with Prof Brenton Broadstock, Dr Stuart Greenbaum and Johanna Selleck, and studies in voice with Stephen Grant.   He has also studied cello from the age of 9.  Since completing the ABC/Melbourne Symphony Young Composer's Course whilst still at secondary school, Steven has composed a large number of works, from unaccompanied solo pieces to full orchestral scores, as well as a number of soundtracks for short films.

He is an active vocal performer in groups such as e21, Cantores Sumus, and the Choir of Ormond College and has a particular interest in choral and vocal ensemble music, working closely with the Melbourne Composition Choir (a group devoted to new music, specifically by Melbourne composers).   Steven currently holds the positions of Principal Bass at St Johns, Toorak and Choral Scholar at St Marks, Fitzroy and has made appearances at the International Melbourne Arts Festival, Port Fairy Spring Festival, the Ballarat 'Organs of the Goldfields' festival and the Hamilton 'Promenade of Sacred Music'.   He most recently played the role of Polydorus in the 150th Anniversary production of Berlioz's L'Enfance du Christ.

In 2003, Steven received several commissions and had choral works performed in Switzerland, Italy, Poland, Germany, Denmark, the Port Fairy Festival as well as regular performances in and around Melbourne.  His Sequence for pipe-organ was premiered at the cathedral Notre Dame de Valère in Sion (Switzerland), housing the oldest pipe-organ in the world.   2004 commissions include a work for harpsichord and strings, premiered 1st May 2004 by Liz Anderson and the Eucordos String Quartet, as well as a piece for solo unaccompanied cello, first performed at the Australian National Academy of Music by Kazimirs Krasovskis (August 22nd 2004).

As well as performance and composition commitments, Steven currently works casually for the AMEB in their proof-reading/editing department.   In 2005 he will be composer-in-residence for Melbourne early music specialists Past Echoes, as well as appearing regularly as part of the Location and Reflection series with the newly emerging composer collective 5:fifteen.  He will also be studying for a Masters degree at Melbourne University, but would prefer not to think about that right now.
